Staying Healthy During Summer Heat

Follow these 5 simple steps to stay healthy in the heat!

Drink plenty of water:

It’s something we hear a lot ‘keep your fluids up’, but in the warmer weather it can be easy to get caught up and become dehydrated. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, soda and other unhealthy drinks. Stick to water if you want to keep your body healthy.

Keep yourself cool:

Keep yourself cool by staying out of the direct sunlight. Hang out in the shade or stay inside with shades closed and air conditioner on. If you’re feeling like you’re overheating, cool down by misting yourself with water or jump in a cool shower.

Avoid going out in the hottest part of the day:

If you don\’t have to expose yourself to the heat, don\’t. Stay inside and keep cool. If you must go out, choose the earliest part of the day and late evenings as these are the cooler parts of the days.

Eat smaller meals:

According to doctors, at its simplest level all of the body\’s functions, including digestion, create heat within the body. A body working over-time to keep cool will suppress appetite in an attempt to lessen its work load and heat.

Look out for family, friends and the elderly:

According to the Centers for Disease Control, extreme heat kills more Americans each year than hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes and floods combined. It is critically important to check on older neighbors and family members, especially those who live alone.

If you go outside during the day, wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved and light-colored clothing, a hat, sunglasses and SPF30+ or higher sunscreen. It is important that we take care of ourselves in the heat, and also work together to care for those more vulnerable, such as the elderly and animals.
